XML ToolWorks Plug-In for Adobe InDesign
Adding the sophisticated processing engine of XML ToolWorks to the out-of-the box XML foundation of Indesign results in the perfect marriage. With that union, enterprise-class xml functionality previously available only in high end proprietary products becomes available in open, off-the-shelf xml workflow systems.
Right out of the box InDesign does a good job of managing straightforward xml import and export. When you add the sophisticated processing power of the XML ToolWorks engine making complex dtd-aware xml decisions, enhanced by our one-to-many style mapping capability, ToolWorks seamlessly imports and exports valid xml data every time and easily handles any range of document types - from the simplest to the most-complex.
On export it creates valid xml if you use a dtd (it works with any DTD) or outputs hierarchical and well-formed xml if no dtd is involved. On import it reads in XML data and perfectly styles and formats your InDesign document.
But it doesn't stop with one-step valid xml files from InDesign. XML ToolWorks imports and exports images, tables, special characters.
Workflows from Word to InDesign become easy when used in conjunction with our our MS Word plug-in. Flow from Word to a perfect first flow layout in one easy step. Revisions in either application can update the source xml and the content in the other application.
And there is more. You can enhance the richness of your output xml by using our InDesign Metanotes editor. This gives you the ability to associate metadata to your InDesign content on the document, image, text box, or character string level. On export you have the option to export the content as xml, the metadata as xml and/or merge the two files to a single xml file combining content and metadata.

Set-Up
XML ToolWorks - Adobe InDesign Plug-In is available for import-only, export-only, or roundtrip XML workflows.
Prior to beginning import or export whether for a single document or a batch, some administrative set up is required. A map file is created one-time for a class of document types. The map-file associates styles found in the document types with XML element names and XML hierarchies. We have a Map-builder tool to make creating a map easy!
If you are using a DTD, this is targeted by XML ToolWorks processing engine.
Converting, exporting and importing
Thereafter, the map and dtd are used by the engine to create the XML. If you use a dtd, the ToolWorks will write valid xml conforming to your dtd. For work not involving a dtd XML ToolWorks creates well formed and hierarchically correct xml.
On import XMl ToolWorks creates perfectly styled InDesign documents no matter how design intensive the page layout.
Choose your Workflow XML ToolWorks gives you perfect xml in a one step process from InDesign. Where you go from there is up to you!
With XML ToolWorks you can author in Word and flow to finished print layout in InDesign. Revisions in either application can update the source xml and the content in the other application.
Have a Print to Web application ?Is archive conversion your goal?
In this case you use XML ToolWorks export capability. When the final print page is ready you process the document through XML ToolWorks and go straight to xml, and use CSS to get perfect web pages automatically, or target the xml for a database or content management system.
Is your current xml process too complex ?
Perhaps you’ve implemented an xml based workflow but the quality of the XML has been a problem. Look no further than XMl ToolWorks. In a one step process XML ToolWorks writes valid XML conforming to any DTD, not restricted to MS schema, and eliminates the need for complex post process xslt’s to arrive at valid xml. (The secret is in XML ToolWorks engine powerful processing technology.)
